Magic: The Gathering Tournament Line-up for GottaCon 2010
It is with great pleasure that we announce that Mike MacPhee and his team of certified DCI judges will be returning and running most of our Magic: The Gathering events at GottaCon 2010. Mike will be coming over from Vancouver with his operation and staff to ensure that all our events are run smoothly and professionally. Besides Mike two other judges will be running the show. There will be one level two DCI judge, Max Knowlan, and one level one judge, Niko Skartvedt overseeing the operations.
What does this mean? It means all major events, such as the Worldwake launch parties as well as the Vancouver Island Magic Community (VIMC) M:TG Open will be run at a rules enforcement level of competitive. Also we will have three official Worldwake launch parties with promos, two on Saturday and one on Sunday. Mike and his team bring experience, professionalism and a reputation which are sure to attract a larger player base.
Below find a brief list of the Magic: The Gathering events you will find at GottaCon 2010. There will be thousands of dollars in prizes to be won in our MTG line-up. Major Events:
TCG - Magic: The Gathering - VIMC M:TG Open Part 1 (FNM) Constructed

Welcome to the Vancouver Island Magic Community (VIMC) M:TG Open Tournament. This tournament consists of three formats (two qualifiers and one final) in which participants face off for hundreds of dollars in prizes. The top four of each qualifier will advance to the finals. If someone finishes top four in both qualifiers the 5th place player in the sealed qualifier will advance to the final (and so on). Qualifier finish order will be determined by the swiss style tournament format. In each format there is a prize pool to be won.
In Part one, each participant must bring their own Standard constructed deck consisting of no less than 60 cards and follow the current standard constructed rules. The tournament will consist of swiss style rounds. Part one will also be a sanctioned Friday Night Magic Event with promos for the top four. Deck lists required.
Price: The cost to participate in the entire M:TG Open is $40. If you have purchased a full weekend pass to GottaCon 2010 the cost is $25. If you wish to only take part in the standard event and not the overall M:TG Open, entry is $10 (you cannot qualify for the finals this way).
Prizes will be awarded to the top 16 based on attendance.
TCG - Magic: The Gathering - VIMC M:TG Open Part 2 (Launch Party) Sealed

Start time: Noon
In Part two, each participant will be provided with three booster packs of Zendikar and three boosters of Worldwake. Participants are given 20 minutes to register the sealed pool and 30 minutes to construct their deck using the sealed pool they are given. Swiss style rounds will be run. Part two will also be a sanctioned Worldwake launch party event with promos to be given out on a first come first serve basis.
Price: The cost to participate in the entire M:TG Open is $40. If you have purchased a full weekend pass to GottaCon 2010 the cost is $25. If you wish to only take part in the Sealed event and not the overall M:TG Open, entry is $30 (you cannot qualify for the finals this way).
Prizes will be awarded to the top 16 based on attendance.
TCG - Magic: The Gathering - VIMC M:TG Open Part 3 Top 8 Finals Draft

Total prize pool value for the entire event is over $2000 (based on 60 or more players)
In Part three (the finals), the top four from each of the previous two qualifiers duke it out in a single elimination Draft. Each finalist will be provided with two boosters of Zendikar and one booster of Worldwake to draft a deck consisting of no less than 40 cards. The tournament will be single elimination best of 3 games with no time limits.
You must qualify to play in this non-sanctioned tournament.
Prizes will be award to the top eight based on attendance.
TCG - Magic: The Gathering - GottaCon Two Headed Giant Sealed Tournament

This event will be run by Mike MacPhee and his team of certified DCI judges.
Teams will receive three boosters of Zendikar and 4 boosters of Worldwake to construct 2 decks with in this sanctioned tournament. Teams will be given 45 minutes to construct their decks. Teams will face off in a swiss style tournament.
Price: $35 per team
Prizes: 3 boosters per team entered into pool plus 2 boxes of From the Vault: Exiled for 1st place team and 2 boxes of vs. decks for the 2nd place team.
TCG - Magic: The Gathering - GottaCon Victoria vs. Vancouver Grudge Match

Formats to be Played:
Standard Constructed, Draft, Extended
Team Composition:
Teams will be composed of nine players and one alternate. One of the nine players will be considered the team captain and he will speak for the team. Each team will break their nine players into three groupings or three players, which will be called a cluster. One cluster will represent Standard Constructed, one cluster will represent Draft and one cluster will represent Extended. The alternate player is in place just in case a team member can’t be present for the actual event. The alternate player should be able to play in all 3 format types. The alternate player will be included in the prize payout.
How Teams are Built:
It is up to the city involved to construct their team. This can be done by simply picking 10 people, or holding a vote or hold qualifiers or any combination of the above or another method of your choosing. Once a team is created and each player is assigned to a cluster. Each player in a cluster should be assigned one of the following numbers the day of the event; one, two or three.
Execution of the Event:
Each cluster will face off against the same format cluster of the opposing team in round robin format and DCI rules. Each player in a cluster will face off against each player in the opposing team cluster in a best of three games match. All clusters will play at the same time for a total of three rounds for each cluster. By running the event this way it should conclude within 4 hours. Players are not allowed to communicate/help their teammates during matches.
Point System:
Each match victory within a cluster is worth one point. There will be a total of nine matches per cluster which means a total of 27 points up for grabs. No ties allowed. The team with the most points at the end wins.
Team Entry Fee:
$200 per team which will go towards paying for the draft pool, trophy, and winning team prizes.

TCG - Magic: The Gathering - Skyhaven Games Worldwake Draft Launch Party

Take part in this sanctioned Worldwake Launch Party draft tournament. Each participant will receive three boosters of Worldwake.
Post draft participants are given 30 minutes to construct their deck. Swiss style rounds will be run. REL competitive.
Price: $16
Prizes: 2 boosters per entry, Feature matches as well as launch party promos while supplies last.
TCG - Magic: The Gathering – Dice Bag Games Worldwake Draft Launch Party

Take part in this sanctioned Worldwake Launch Party draft tournament. Each participant will receive three boosters of Worldwake.

Prizes: 2 boosters per entry, Feature matches as well as launch party promos while supplies last.
TCG - Magic: The Gathering - GottaCon Extended Tournament

Each participant must bring their own minimum 60 card constructed deck built using the current Extended restrictions.
Price: $10
Prizes: Chase rares for 2nd to 5th place (last year was Ravnica Duals) plus box of From the Vault: Exiled for 1st place.
TCG - Magic: The Gathering - GottaCon Highlander Tournament

This event will be run by Mike MacPhee and his team of certified DCI judges.
Each participant must bring their own minimum 100 card constructed deck built using the following Highlander rules and restrictions.
- The only card restrictions are no "Ante" Cards, dexterity Cards.
- Any card from Alpha up through the latest Magic set can be used. Cards from the Portal sets, International Collector Editions, and Championship decks can be used provided you put all your cards in opaque sleeves and the International Collector Edition card edges are rounded.
- Only one copy of any card other then basic lands and basic snow lands
- all decks should be sleeved
- No sideboards are used

Prizes: Revised or better dual lands for 2nd to 3rd place and From the Vault: Exiled for 1st place.
